Omega-3 Day

Every March 3rd, we celebrate Global Omega-3 Day—a day dedicated to the omega-3s EPA and DHA, their importance to human health, and the need to incorporate more of them into our diets.

This Global Omega-3 Day, we want to share three reasons why we created Aquaterra – a new and novel source of EPA and DHA.

1. Omega-3 demand is outpacing available supply.

For the past 25 years, the production of fish oil has been flat, while in that time, the world’s population has increased by more than 2 billion people, and aquaculture production has more than tripled. A big challenge for aquaculture feed has been the replacement of fish oil, due to the essential omega-3 acids it contains.

We have spent more than 20 years developing Aquaterra. A generation of scientific expertise dedicated to creating a new source of omega-3 EPA and DHA that doesn’t rely on limited marine sources, to give aquaculture the flexibility and possibility to meet the demands of the future.

2. Both people and fish need EPA and DHA in their diets.

The omega-3s  EPA and DHA play important roles in human health, supporting heart, brain, eye, and overall health. They’re also important to the health and nutritional quality of the fish we eat.

Salmon fed diets with Aquaterra have been found to have:

The world needs new sources of omega-3s, for both fish health and human health. That’s what makes Aquaterra so crucial as a source of omega-3 nutrition. This once-in-a-generation advancement can meet aquaculture’s ever-growing need for omega-3 EPA and DHA, within existing infrastructure.

3. Aquaterra is a much-needed new and renewable source of EPA and DHA.

Fish oil has historically been a core ingredient in aquafeeds, as its omega-3 content is essential to fish growth and development, and to providing consumers with a healthful, nutritious source of protein.

However, fish oil production has  reached its maximum, as production has been stable for a quarter century. For the aquaculture industry to continue to grow and produce high quality and nutritious seafood, new sources of EPA and DHA are needed.

Aquaterra can play a key role in increasing the aquaculture industry’s access to omega-3 nutrition. It contains high levels of DHA and other omega-3s and has a low omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Most importantly, it is plant-based, making it a scalable and renewable means for seafood producers to secure their supply of omega-3 nutrition.

It’s possible for the aquaculture industry to grow, while meeting the expectations and nutritional needs of consumers. Aquaterra is what makes that possible.

Global Omega-3 Day and Aquaterra exist for the same reason—because omega-3s are important to health, and both fish and people need to consume more of them.

We hope you’ll celebrate Global Omega-3 Day by joining us in our mission to increase the world’s access to complete omega-3 nutrition. Contact us to learn how Aquaterra can improve the health of your consumers, and your business.
